This happens, it happened to me one morning on I95 near West Palm threw so
much smoke the fire department came and the road sort of shut down for a
few minutes. I was in a bad way from a long night of drinking and just
about lost my mind, I had just spent 8400 bucks putting in new injectors
and a upgraded fuel pump. Anyway the fired department people were asking me
if I had a history of mental illness if that tells you anything about how i
was behaving. Anyway what happens is this the fuel pumps on these diesels
are hooked to the motor via chain and wheel, so if any fuel related failure
such as blown injector tip will fill the whole engine with gas when it
lights one time the motor continues to move pistons up and down and thus
continues pumping fuel via that pump hooked to it by chain and wheel. Only
thing that can be done is to stop the air at that point because it is going
to continue get fuel as long as the pump keep revolving. With that being
said no many people would try to approach the hood with a tool box when
this is going on. Flying metal kills people I learned that in the Army so I
    ran. ?

disconnect the battery.. ahah good luck with that! It’s a diesel it doesn’t
need a battery.. You only have to hold down the brake hard, press the
clucth, put it in 5th gear and let go the clutch quickly! It will stall..?

I would plug up the air intake, that would stop it.
    No oxygen = no combustion.?

Yes you could plug up the intake, but I wouldn’t take the risk of having a
connecting rod launched through the block, through me, and into the next
county. It would be best to just stand there and enjoy the show.?

shouldve put it in the highest gear and dumped the clutch or sprayed an
    extinguisher in the intake?

Mud flap and a 2×6, hold it down over the intake or turbo and the engine
    will stall.?

It’s called “runaway” diesel. Only way to stop it.. Cut off air supply but
it’s easier said than done. ?

Its not my truck. It is running off its own oil because the ups driver was
driving the truck hard and while the engine was hot he shut the engine off
melting the seals of the turbo. The oil was going past he seal into the
intake and fueling the engine. The only thing you can do is block the air
intake or shove it into gear hoping the brakes hold.?

Scotty! I need warp speed now! Captain! I’m giving her all she’s
got!…Burrrrrrr…… Dammit Jim. It’s a van not a starship. This line of
    jokes is illogical. :-
    l Sorry.?

Exactly what he said. Take off the battery.?

Seems like the only person who really knows wtf is going is recording it
    instead of helping.?

Floor mat (if it’s thick) piece of wood. Of the CO2 extinguisher he should
have on him…. I’m sorry all should have extinguishers in cars and all
    diesels should have CO2…?

Use your imagination lol. But a battery disconnect won’t necessarily stop a
diesel or a runaway at that. Once it’s going it runs on oil not fuel and if
that’s an old Idi like a lot of the ups trucks here at least then no chance
clipping the battery is gonna stop the mechanical pump…?
