Actually I am currently driving a Chevy 1500 1/2 ton with a 6.5L turbo Diesel. Pretty sweet truck too. Though to be fair only 1% of 1995 Chevy C1500’s were Diesels
And what exactly classifies a “cookie cutter car”?? Their selection is comparable to Ford and Chrysler. They were also the only one of the big three who actually made their own diesels. GM Diesel/Detroit Diesel made some of the most widely used heavy duty diesels for 60+ years. There are plenty of 6.2/6.5 diesels with 400,000+ miles on them. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want a little Mercedes diesel in my truck, either. You sir, are a moron.
my truck does the same exact thing, i have a 94 chevy c2500 with the good ‘ol 6.5, has 210,000 miles, everyone talks shit about the 6.5 but i’ve had really good luck with mine – its a pullin sob
I got a 1991 C1500 6.2L NA 4spd manual 2wd. I get asked all the time if it is factory, a lot of people didn’t know that gm built diesel half tons. I see plenty of 4wd 1/2 ton diesels, but the 2wd 1/2 ton diesels are extremely rare.
my 1994 k2500 starts smooth and a very little poof of smoke without block heater and 28 degrees out. and has 180000 miles on it. dude you have some problems. check your glow plugs
my truck is a 97 with 91000 miles on a cold day with out being plugged in it’ll start right up and there’ll be a big puff of white smoke and in about a second it clears up
Nothing wrong with the glowplugs… tested them all…
Yes, if you’re looking for reliable power, a bigblock is a better choice…. More hp, almost as much torque, and more reliable….. Now, chip a 6.5 and you’ll have some decent power, but you still have the unreliable aspect..
bull s the glow plugs are good…. you hear it start to knock then the smoke goes away? that is because all the cylinders are firing. you have a couple dead plugs. test the wires to make sure the power is getting to the plugs.

i had the same issue with my 12 V cummins, ran like sh*t until it got warmed up…. plungers were shit in the bosch injection pump. I replaced the p-pump with a rebuilt and now i dont have any problems and i never plug it in. (i live in state college Pa.) MAY NEED NEW INJECTION PUMP. let me know how it works out
It gets worse. we have ad the same problem with our 94 6.5 for 4 years. soon it will just start turning and turning and it seems like there is no chance its gonna start then it just will. persnally i think its just a 6.5 thing heard of a lot of them gettin that way. sounds just like ours did for we replaced the engine at 297000.
Probably got this figured out by now and i dident read all the comments but sure looks like your PDM is screwed, get a new one and move it to the front bumper, keeps it cooler and lasts a lot longer.
Yeah the guys right the trucks were custom ordered like that. There are few out there but they do exist.

my 93 PSD has 220000 miles on it and the worst i get even when its gets in the 20’s is a big puff of white smoke and then its fine
cylinder low temperatures on startup …..it shows white…thats normal for most diesels….as it warms up and smoothes out it should burn cleaner …
REPLACE ALL GLOW PLUGS!
should i stay away from that engine ? should I go bigblock instead ?

@Veikra
depends on what you want to do

All you need is glow plug connectors.
haha my 95 smokes 3 times as much an it’ll smoke for a half hour if i let it
That’s those shitty diesels for ya. I promise that’s not a good sound at all
what kinda mileage do u get

@deerefanatic their only unreliable when you dont maintain them properly
That’s not bad at all. It’s just starved for fuel.
