vw rabbit turbo diesel autocross race

Shepherd Auto Parts - Buy Auto Parts Online

first time out racing the diesel rabbit, 2 days after buying it, on one hour of sleep after spending 36hrs straight preparing it for this race. It was a high-adrenaline environment, and I was wearing steel toe boots! Managed to beat an integra, a talon AWD turbo, a lotus elise turbo, a bigblock corvette and a rotary powered mg before getting eliminated. what fun!

Don’t know much about this kind of racing, but it looks like a lot of fun…it’s the diesel engine that gets my attention.

I think its less than 150bhp, lots of torque aswell.
Getting 150bhp from a 1.6 petrol engine of this vintage is difficult!
With a TD u just turn up fuelling and boost along with bigger intercooler so the extra heat doesnt reduce density to such a point that u get higher boost but less air!
My ford 1.8td has 90bhp standard and 130lb/ft.
    A bit shit.
The 1.8 none turbo version of mine has 60bhp.
There is also a non intercooled 70bhp version of mine.

Holy hell, whats done to that motor? ive got mine pumped up a little bit.. but nothing like that. bigger pump and injectors?

  7. my1little2pony says:

NO you cant do that the head on the non turbos are not meant to take the extra heat they will crack and all kinds of problems will come from it and the injector pumps are completely different their are more oiling ports in the turbo blocks and the pistons and rods are built to take more heat in the turbos

That thing is a beast, surprisingly quick in a straight line and it handles and grips really well, great job man, I love it.

you can actually see in a diesel sure, the accelerating parte by the smoke it produces during accel. love diesels!

I had an 81 rabbit 1.6 diesel. It didnt have much power but it handled better than anything else I have owned!

finished top third of the field. beaten finally by a supercharged miata that went on to win overall.

  22. Norseberserk says:

How does it sound so good? I want a diesel that sounds like that.

  23. Norseberserk says:

@6tibbar Can you do things like that with a more contemporary golf chassis/engine?

  24. 6tibbar says:

    @Norseberserk
The exhaust you heard during the first run is actually the G60 scirocco i was competing against. Diesels can sound that good too, but not with a turbocharger.
Normally aspirated, or supercharged diesel sound amazing. Check my other videos out to hear one.
