If you have been keeping a close eye on fuel prices lately you will notice that diesel fuel is still a better deal. Only certain vehicles are set up to operate on this type of fuel though. Of course many people choose to buy a pickup that operates on diesel fuel just so they can save some money in the long run of things. It is definitely something to think about with our economy in the shape that it is in. Semi trucks and many other types of equipment vehicles also operate on diesel fuel.

Most vehicles that do operate with diesel fuel get better gas mileage than other types of vehicles though. They also allow the engine to run cleaner and that often means that the vehicle is going to last much longer. You won’t have as much wear and tear in the engine so your vehicle could last five or ten years longer than if you aren’t using diesel fuel.

Research shows that diesel fuel burns much cleaner as well so there is less emissions being released into the environment. With the millions of vehicles on the road these days it is something to really think about. Offering more vehicles that operate on diesel fuel means that the air can be better to breath for everyone. Yet there does seem to be more sulphur in diesel fuel which isn’t good for the environment.

Most gas stations do offer diesel fuel as well as regular and unleaded. This is very convenient as it means you can get your fuel for a diesel vehicle just about anywhere that sales fuel. About 50 billon gallons of diesel fuel are consumed annually in the United States. This number is expected to double in the next 20 years.

Some individuals have been experimenting with synthetic diesel fuel as well. As strange as it may seem this type of diesel fuel is made from sewage remains, food scraps, and even used vegetable oil. There is a process that it is put through in order to make it into a form that can be used for vehicles. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the use of synthetic diesel fuel.

?Diesel Fuel Prices Explained

By and large, the soaring high diesel fuel prices nowadays are generating a shocking effect on all and sundry. With the impact of recession, nearly all country leaders are calling on the citizens to tighten their belts and be ready for the further distractions that may come along. This is not fun at all, so to speak.

A Quick Background

Diesel fuel is named after its creator, Rudolf Diesel, a German engineer. The design was originally patented in the year 1892. Basically introduced to be cheaper than the price of gasoline, diesel has nowadays been subject to the increase in cost. In any part of the globe, diesel is an integral part of the economy. Just like in America, diesel is vital in the people’s way of life, the country’s economy, as well as its overall security. With its value being openly escalating, USA and the rest of the diesel fuel dependents are somehow downtrodden.

Diesel Fuel and How it is Made

The petroleum diesel is said to be refined and distillated from crude oil. In fact, the No. 2 distillate is the most popularly used among the myriad of types or grades. It is also the principal source of motor diesel fuel as used up in the entire United States. It proves useful in heating the buildings and is utilized by most major industries. After all, it contains low sulfur.

On the other hand, you should have heard about the term “biodiesel”. This is another type of fuel which had been unraveled by Rudolf Diesel. It was originally thought of to be rooted from vegetable seed oil. As of the latest technology, biodiesel can be made from animal fats, vegetable oils, and even out of second-hand restaurant grease. Since it is characterized as more nature-friendly, it lessens the emission of carbon monoxide, particulates, and the hydrocarbons. Mixing up 80% of petroleum diesel with 20% biodiesel generally enhances the elimination of sulfur from the diesel fuel engine.

An Explanation on the High Price of Diesel Fuel

You might be wondering why the price of diesel fuel is now more than the price of gasoline. Before, diesel fuel had a lower cost but things have changed. There are factors that affect its price change. They are the following:

The changing season. During the winter season, the demand for the distillate heating oil is up and about so the value of which is also made higher. Talk about the law of supply and demand!

Excise taxes. When the taxes are expensive, then its price also increases.

The value and the worldwide supply of crude oil. The capacity to produce the supply of crude oil along with the assigned value also creates an impact on its price.

The height of refining capacity and international demand. Since the world largely depends on the diesel fuel refineries in the United States, there are times when its capacity ends up too tight thus increasing its cost.

Economic status. Typically the price of diesel fuel is affected by the stability of the economy.

Other factors that affect the diesel fuel prices include the cost of transportation from the refineries and the terminals, the local and regional competition, the costs of equipment, rent, salaries, insurance, local and state fees. So, have you gauged why the value of this much-needed fuel unpredictable?

?Why Are West Coast Prices For Diesel Fuel So Volatile?
Depending on part of the country you reside
in, prices of diesel fuel can be extremely
volatile. No where is this more true then on the West Coast. The prices of diesel fuel on the West Coast tend to increase and decrease at greater rates and costs more then in other parts of the country. There are several reasons for this.
In California, one of the primary reasons for comparatively higher gas prices has to do with supply issues. Higher taxation on diesel fuel also has a negative impact (for drivers) on diesel fuel pieces. Diesel fuel in California has a state, use and local taxes of 7.25 %. Add to this, 24.4 cents per gallon for the Federal excise tax, and 18 cents state tax. The state of Washington is also notorious for having high and volatile fuel prices. They have a state tax of 34 cents, which is one of the largest in the United States.
Diesel fuel cost is also higher in this part of the country due to
the lack of nearby supply sources. Most of the West Coast refineries are in California. In order for prices to be stable and as low as possible, these Californian refineries have to be running at full capacity just to meet the demands of California.
Trying to provide the nearby states with the fuel that they need can be very difficult. If there are any problems with the California refineries or any of the 36 refineries on the West Coast, this makes the situation extremely volatile. Because the amount of fuel available shrinks, the prices go up.
Besides not having enough local refineries, the distance to obtain diesel fuel from other sources in the United States can also cost problems Californians will have to pay for the shipment of fuel the Gulf cost or from sources outside the country.
When company is shipped from another country or from another part of the same country, fuel surcharges will be added to the price of the fuel. Fuel carriers will include transportation surcharges. These surcharges can be whatever the transportation decides they are going to be. There is no federal oversight of surcharges. Therefore, transportation companies can really stick it to states that need emergency fuel. Of course, these increased costs will be transferred to the consumer.
Individuals on the West Cost who drive vehicles with diesel engines have not doubt faced the effects of higher and more volatile gas prices more then individuals in other parts of the country. Many Western states have expensive taxes. Along with the higher then average state tax, the strong dependence of a small number of refineries mean that everything has to go perfectly so that everyone can have access to affordable fuel.
Things do not always work as they should and the costs to bring in fuel from outside of the country or from different parts of the United States costs money. These costs must be absorbed by the consumer. Fuel transportation companies will charge a premium to ship diesel fuel from other parts of the country, raising the prices at the pump.

?What is Diesel Fuel?
Diesel fuel is primarily a combination of middle distillates and additional additives. Number 2 Heating Oil and kerosene are examples of middle distillates. This type of fuel is made to be used in diesel engines. It is injected into the combustion chamber with high temperature air that is compressed in the chamber. It spontaneously ignites. This is different from traditional gasoline which is ignited by spark plugs in the gasoline engine.
Important aspects of diesel fuel that you should concern yourself with include how clean the fuel is, the quality of ignition, operability, stability and lubricity. In 2007, the United States made a commitment to cleaner diesel fuels. In order to decrease harmful emissions, they set strong, new limits.
Contemporary diesel fuels must have minimal amounts of sulfur. Special equipment must be used to meet these standards. These new, cleaner fuels are referred to as Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel or ULSD. ULSD can be used in all vehicles with a diesel engine, even older models.
Today, not all fueling stations which service diesel fuel have ULSD fuel, but a large number of them do. By 2010, all service stations will be required to provide ULSD fuel. Currently, only 80% of diesel fuel that is used for highway driving made in the United States has to be Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel.
Clean diesel fuel is that which does not have a lot of contaminants in the water. This is very important because a high level of contamination can back up the filters and cause significant damage to a cars fuel infection system. Fuel filters should always be used in a diesel engine to provide adequate protection to a vehicle’s fuel system.
Diesel fuels with high lubricity are advantageous because they prevent the wear and tear of the fuel pump and injector. The use of additives to increase lubricity has become more and more common. Diesel pumps have to be labeled with the type of diesel fuel that the pump is dispensing. A decal must be posted on all pumps. For persons in California, Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel fuel is the only fuel available.
Diesel fuel is a distillate that sometimes is mixed with additives. Diesel fuel is refined to be used in diesel engines. Diesel engines are found in cars, trucks, SUVs as well as farm equipment and recreational vehicles. Modern discussion about diesel fuel has revolved around it’s increased price and how clean it is. In recent years the United States government has made minimum cleanliness requirements for diesel fuel oil refineries. There has been a big push for all diesel fuel to be Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel. While this has yet to be a reality, by 2010 it will be, as the government has demanded that all diesel fuel be of this type by this time.
While the government and many environmentalists are worried about how clean diesel fuel is, the average consumer is worried about the rising costs of diesel fuel. It is more expensive then regular gasoline. This wasn’t always the case. While some argue that diesel fuel provides better miles per gallon, the high prices at the pump are beginning to scare off a lot of people from purchasing vehicles with diesel engines.

?What Effects Diesel Gas Prices?
Historically, diesel fuel prices have been lower then regular gasoline. This is no longer the case. Today, diesel prices hover above regular gasoline. This has been the case for the past 5 years or so. There are several reasons for this.
The demand for diesel fuel all over the world has significantly increased. As the demand has increased so have the prices. Diesel fuel is in demand not only in the United States but also in Europe and in China.
In 2006, the United States made more of a commitment to the use of Ultra low sulfur diesel fuel, which is a cleaner fuel. This has affect the costs of producing diesel fuel and also the costs of distribution. The Federal taxes on diesel fuel are also higher then on gasoline which causes the prices to be higher.
The price of diesel fuel is made of several components. They include taxes, marketing and distribution, refinery costs, and the price of crude oil. Today, the average price of diesel fuel around the United States, is $4.43 per gallon.
Below, we will discuss some of the primary factors which determine diesel fuel prices:
Crude Oil: The price of crude oil, along with available supply will have a major effect on diesel fuel prices. The price of crude oil will raise or lower depending on the demand for it. Burgeoning demand has placed strain the available supply which raises prices for the consumer. When there is only so much of something available and an increasing number people want it, they will have to be willing to pay a premium for it. Diesel fuel is not different. OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) has a major role in determining the price of crude oil. This is because they determine how much oil will be produced by it’s members. The members of OPEC are responsible for nearly 40% of the world’s sources of crude oil.
Refining Capacity: The refining capabilities of diesel fuel are tight. Refineries in the United States are running about 90% capacity. Some other countries use a greater percentage then this. With so many countries close to their capacities and the demand increasing, users will have to pay more for the limited supply.
Imbalance Between Demand and Supply: Diesel fuels are very volatile because the United States is so dependent on it. When its’ demand can not be satisfied, goods can not be shipped and prices will increase for all goods, including diesel fuel.
Transportation Costs: Parts of the country which are further away from the Gulf Coast tend to have higher diesel prices because of the added transportation costs.
There are many different components which go into how much consumers will pay for diesel fuel. The primary ones include the price of crude oil, the refining capacity in a particular area, whether or not there is an imbalance between demand and supply and transportation costs. If there is a dip in refinery capacity in a certain part of the country, diesel fuel must be shipped in. This will result in increased prices at the pump. The transportation costs to bring in the fuel and the lower supply will cause the price to shoot up.

?Types of Diesel Fuel
All diesel fuels are not the same. They are classified into three groups, 1D, 2D and 4D fuels. 1D and 2D fuels are used for highway vehicles or for mobile equipment. 4D fuel is used for units that are either slow or stationary. Diesel engines which are high speed are fuel by either 2D or 1D.
Diesel fuels differ based on their pour point, viscosity and cetane number. What separate 1D fuel from 2D fuel is the viscosity and the pour point. The pour point is defined as the lowest possible temperature that a liquid will still flow. Viscosity is how much a liquid can resist flow. 1D fuel can handle lower temperatures, the fuel will still flow even when the temperature drops. This makes it great for cold temperatures. The pour point is lower and so is the viscosity.
2D fuel has a higher pour point and viscosity. It is best for higher temperatures. Increased viscosity is responsible for improved lubrication in the fuel injection system. The higher BTU’s in 2D fuel allows it to generate more power per gallon of fuel. Higher Btu’s generate increased power. This increases fuel economy. Vehicles with more British thermal units will get more miles per gallon.
The cetane rating is very similar to the octane rating of gasoline. However, there is one significant difference. Cetane measures the ease of fuel ignition. Increased cetane ratings mean the fuel ignites easier. This differs from octane ratings. The higher the octane rating is for gasoline, the resistance is higher for ignition. Manufacturers often have maximum and minimum cetane ratings. Besides meeting 2D or 1D specification, these fuels must also have minimum Btu ratings. If they are not high enough, the miles per gallon will decrease.
Different fuels have different attributes and functions. The same is true for diesel fuel. There are three primary groups. They include 1D, 2D, and 4D fuels. 4D fuel is used for machinery that is either slow moving or that does not move at all. Your 1D and 2D fuels will power your motor vehicles. What sets apart various types of fuels are their cetane number, pour point and viscosity.
2D diesel fuel is best to use in high temperatures. It has a high pour point and high viscosity. 1D diesel fuel on the other hand, is good in lower temperatures. It has a lower pour point and viscosity then 2D fuel.
The Cetane rating is also important when it comes to diesel fuel. It is similar to what the octane rating is to gasoline. It measures fuel ignition and how easy it is to ignite the fuel. The higher the cetane rating, the easier the ignition. Vehicle manufacturers do require that their vehicles have minimum and maximum cetane ratings.
1D, 2D and 4D diesel fuels will not be of concern to the average vehicle owner. The type of fuel which will be used for diesel engines is often long decided before the vehicle is rolled out. This information is for car mechanic enthusiasts and for those that are interested in related matters.

?How is Diesel Fuel Made and Who Uses It?
Diesel fuel is the name given for vehicle fuel that is used in compression ignition engines. It gets its’ name from Rudolf Diesel, a German engineer who invented this type of fuel. A patent for the original fuel design was registered in 1892.
Diesel engines can use a variety of fuels, including biodiesel, it is refined from crude oil. Diesel fuel is very important to the United States and to countries around the world. Many countries major transport vehicles use diesel fuel and so they are dependent on diesel fuel for commerce and the transportation of goods.
Diesel fuel is made from crude oil and is a distillate. There are different types and grades of distillates. Number 2 is the most commonly used diesel fuel in the United States.
It is used not only to fuel vehicles but also to heat buildings. Delivery trucks, semi-trucks, trains, boats, buses, barges, military vehicles, and farming equipment use diesel fuel. Most of the fuel is used for motor vehicles while around 25% is used for off road equipment and vehicles.
The vast majority of diesel fuel refined in the United States is made in the United States. Only around 5% of it comes from other countries. Refineries in the U.S. manufacture diesel fuel from crude oil that comes from both domesticated and foreign sources. Diesel fuel is sent by pipeline to terminals which are close to populous areas. Tanker trucks then pick up the fuel and deliver it to gas stations.
The retail price of diesel fuel is dependent on various components. These include the process of refinery, the cost of crude oil, the retail station, marketing, distribution and the availability of product from refineries. How much each of these components figure into the price differs from time to time and also based on the situation.
If U.S. refineries experience trouble and states have to depend on outside sources, the price of diesel will increase in these areas. If the price of crude oil goes up, so will the price of diesel fuel. Taxes, whether they are State, Federal or local will also greatly influence the price of diesel. Some states have higher taxes, such as Washington and California, while other states, such as Missouri, have much cheaper state taxes. Federal excise taxes are the same in every state and in 2008, where a little over 24 cents per gallon. The average state excise tax is around 22 cents for every gallon, although some states, such as Washington, which has a 34 cents per gallon tax, is much more expensive. The owners of retail pumps also determine costs. Retail gas stations which are owned by refiners can sell the fuel for cheaper then a reseller can.
Most diesel fuel is refined in the United States. However, American refineries do use crude oil from foreign countries, therefore, diesel engines are still reliant on foreign fuel. The price of diesel fuel will be dependent upon the costs of crude oil, supply and demand and transportation costs.

?Diesel Trucks – How Far They Have Come
Diesel trucks these days are not really what they were way back when they were
first built. Be it in terms of performance, look or popularity, they have
endured a long journey in the automotive world as they constantly evolved with
it.
During its time of creation many decades back, the diesel truck was created
with the sole purpose of being a utility vehicle able to transport heavy loads
for long distances with the option of a diesel engine chosen for the sake of
economical purposes. As it grew throughout the years, much of its purpose is
still the same but almost every other thing about it is either new or
different.
Of course, one notable change diesel trucks experience is the one in the looks
department. Then again, which vehicle does not change its design and styling as
the years go by? The more notable changes in diesel trucks are how they perform
today as compared to years back and how they are being used.
These days, a diesel engine simply isn’t enough. Despite its roots indicating that diesel trucks were made to be as
efficient as possible in doing their simple task, these vehicles have grown in
stature and are not only fitted with the technologically advanced common rail
diesel engines but are also turbocharged to give that extra kick in performance
as though their big engines are not good enough.
With more performance inclined diesel trucks available, these vehicles are
being used more widely in off-road activities, an area dominated by SUVs not
that long ago. In fact, diesel trucks have come such a long way that there is a
category for them to compete in the world renowned Dakar Rally.
Apart from the major transformation in terms of performance throughout the
years, diesel, or should they be called turbo-diesel trucks have become
vehicles of fancy. Trucks like the Dodge Ram for example do not sell only on
their insanely huge and probably unnecessary 5.9 liter engine but also their
image, an American muscle image to be exact.
Because of its use or more specifically misuse in this era, diesel trucks are
now in a category of vehicles suffering from a large amount of criticism
because of their efficiency and emissions. If people who only had themselves to
carry stop this trend of using a truck just for the sake of liking it, this
would not be the situation.
Yes, diesel trucks have come a long way indeed. Despite certain changes in what
runs them and how they are utilized, they still are in essence the same kind of
vehicle it was when it first tasted tarmac. For this reason alone, diesel
trucks still have a long road awaiting them ahead.

?Diesel Trucks – How Far They Have Come
Diesel trucks have evolved significantly ever since they were first introduced.
Not only have their looks and popularity improved but also its performance.
When the diesel truck was first conceived more than half a century ago, its
main function was as a transport vehicle to carry heavy cargo between distant
destinations. The diesel engine was very popular because of its efficiency and
was very rewarding on long distance trips. Decades later, the main purpose of
diesel trucks remain but with many new functions.
The aesthetic value of diesel trucks, like any other vehicle has greatly
increased over time. Nevertheless, the most significant development in diesel
trucks is its performance.
Although diesel engines were made with the purpose to be more efficient in
being utility vehicles than their more powerful petrol counterparts, they do
not meet the demands of today’s market. Nowadays, people want even more power from their already
high-capacity common-rail diesel engines and even add turbochargers for an
extra boost of power.
An abundance in high-performance diesel trucks has resulted in them dominating
off road activities that used to be conquered by SUVs. There is even a category
for diesel trucks in the distinguished Dakar Rally which is a clear indicator
of how much diesel trucks have developed.
The drastic increase in the performance of diesel trucks has also caused them
to be an object of obsession for many automobile enthusiasts. Today, trucks
like the Dodge Ram sell so well not because of their outstanding capability as
a utility vehicle but because of their ridiculous high-capacity engines that
portray the American muscle image.
Buying diesel trucks has now become a rather controversial issue because of
their gas-guzzling engines and exorbitantly high emissions. If people only
purchased diesel trucks for their primary purpose which is to carry heavy
loads, this issue wouldn’t be undergoing such intense criticism.
Nevertheless, we still must give credit to diesel trucks for how much they have
developed over the years. Although their purpose has somewhat evolved
negatively, under the metal and plastic, it is still the same vehicle it was
when it first rolled out of automobile factories. Therefore, we can anticipate
a long journey ahead for diesel trucks as they continue to develop at such a
rapid pace.

?Diesel Trucks – What Makes a Good Diesel Truck?

In the automobiles market today, drivers are lavishly spoilt with large variety
of diesel trucks to pick from than what they had previously. All this fierce
competition between manufacturers has led to an important question for the
prospective owners. Which diesel truck should I spend my money on?

To get to the root of this puzzle, one must first asked the foremost question
“what makes a good diesel truck?” Factors like performance, comfortability,
practicality, and economical all comes into play and only the perfect balance
between all these factors will you find the most suitable truck for your
needs.

As we all know, the soul of the any vehicles including diesel trucks is the
engine for it power the entire vehicle to move. Thus, it is what you should
consider before anything else. Even though there are a few types of diesel
engines such as the common-rail diesel engines, turbo-diesels or in some cases,
a combination of both, most trucks have the same type of diesel engine under
its hoods which differ only in its cubic capacity. Before choosing the right
engine, you must first decide how much power is adequate and how much is
overpowered or underpowered to give a sluggish driving experience.

Apart from the basic purpose of getting you and your load from destination A to
destination B, diesel trucks nowadays also has increased in its comfortability
with some offering luxuries such as cup holders, armrests, leather seats and a
lot more. But do remember, all these do not comes cheaply and will be added to
the overall cost.

The next important consideration is whether to buy a diesel truck with a single
cab or a double cab. Although this is not a hard decision to be made, one must
realize the pros and cons of having an extra row of seats. Surely it will be
handy when you have passengers to carry but when you don’t, the extra weight will decrease the performance and mileage of the diesel
truck.

In terms of practicality, the accessibility and space of the trucks’bed must also be taken into consideration as some trucks do not has sufficient
surface friction to prevent the cargo from moving around during the journey or
the beds suffer from space intrusions from the rear wheels. In addition,
availability of support for canopies must also be thoroughly considered.

In a nutshell, a good diesel truck is one with an engine capable of powering
the vehicle even under the harshest driving condition combined with good fuel
consumption efficiency and providing great comfort at the same time.
