you sure 2009 isn’t the last year for CAT On Highway Engines? i think CAT has really decreased their production for their engines starting with the 2008 model year. most 2008 and newer models seem to have cummins engines.

Hi lordtaw, it’s a year since you said Cat were pulling out of truck engines & what you said is all correct. Over here in Australia, Kenworth have bought their last Cat engines, Detroit won’t supply them with S60s because of their Daimler connections, and Cummins is the only supplier. What you said about the DAF engine is correct, I was in the KW factory last week & they’ve got one there but no one I know wants to buy a European engine even if it has been modified by PACCAR. Too lightweight

I’m getting a 1989 Peterbilt with a 3406, 425 hp from an auction. The odometer says 780,000 miles. It’s stated to be in good condition. What might I expect to have to do to this Cat engine when I get it. Oil change, new rods and bearings, or what? Whats an in-frame & how much might it cost? Thanks 4 the vid.

a ”in frame” is where they rebuild the engine while its still in the frame, they dont remove the entire engine unless they REALLY need to. but as far as what you would have to do to it, it all depends on what you want. like i have seen a entire rebuild new everything except the block run as high as $13.000,

Haymannn If you try to rebuild it yourself you will need a pack removal tool. The sleeve and pistons and rods all come as one. You will also need the installation tool. The 3406 and C-15 are pretty much the same engine and are not parent bored blocks they have cylinder packs.

  13. Hammatt89 December 18, 2009 at 5:36 am #

Hey they will put out anywhere between 20 and 30 psi.

  14. Hammatt89 December 18, 2009 at 5:38 am #

the only thing better about a cummins is they are cheaper to rebuild and can burn cooking grease. You will rebuild a cummins 2 to 3 times before you will have to with a CAT.

  15. Hammatt89 December 18, 2009 at 5:45 am #

    Theres a difference between the 3406E and a C-15.

It will fit you will need to add frame support and suspension support there not light. And the torque they put out will twist the frame.
