?Turbo Diesel Pick Up Trucks and Fuel Dilution Issues

In the past most fuel dilution issues of crankcase oil in turbo charged diesel engines meant there was a mechanical problem of some kind. For 2007 and newer Ford 6.4L, Dodge 6.7L and Gm/GMC 6.6L turbo diesel engines, the emission control systems sometimes are the culprit, as these have been installed to meet more stringent environmental protection agency requirements pertaining to soot.

Not everyone will experience dilution problems, as it will depend largely on how you operate your vehicle. Post 2007 turbo diesels are equipped with a Diesel particulate filter as mandated by the environmental protection agency. These filters reduce the soot emitted by as much as 85%. After so long, these filters have to go through a cleaning process called regeneration. Regeneration can occur during operation when exhaust gas temperatures reach 1,100 degrees. This happens regularly when the engines are worked as intended, such as towing and hauling and is called passive regeneration. It is when these engines are operated around town with no load is when temperatures are to low to passively burn off the soot.

When temperatures do not reach 1,100 degrees, an active regeneration must take place. Two systems are used. In-stream injection and In-cylinder post injection. What happens is raw diesel fuel is introduced into the diesel particulate filter increasing the internal temperature to burn off the soot that has accumulated.

With In-stream injection, the fuel is introduced through a separate injector either behind the turbo charger or in the exhaust stream just prior to the particulate filter. This type of active regeneration is largely used on medium to heavy-duty diesel engines. In-stream does not contribute to fuel dilution.

In cylinder post injection has been adopted by the manufacturers of lighter turbo diesel trucks, mainly because of the lower cost. With this system, the diesel fuel is injected directly into the cylinders with the present injectors but on the exhaust stoke as well as the compression stroke, sending the unburned fuel through the exhaust ports to the particulate filter and be burned that way. This system works well at delivering the fuel to the particulate filter but has the drawback of promoting fuel dilution of the crankcase oil.

As the fuel is injected on the exhaust stroke, fuel is able to pass by piston rings and wash down the cylinder walls as well, entering the crankcase and diluting the oil. Diesel fuel is a solvent and can reduce oil viscosity and film strength of the oil. An increase in oxidation can also occur.

At this point, there is no correlation between fuel dilution and abnormal engine wear. This is a rather new issue and still being studied. Condemnation limits have been set at 5%. Oil analysis samples have shown 7 to 10% dilution rates.

If you have one of these turbo diesels and work it hard, active regeneration will be at a minimum, as will the chance of higher limits of fuel dilution. It will be beneficial for you to have your oil analyzed periodically to see what the saturation level may be in your oil. It would also be a good idea to use premium oil that can better withstand the effects of fuel dilution.

In closing, for the 2011 Ford and General Motors are changing to a system called selective catalytic reduction, eliminating In-cylinder post injection. The Dodge Cummins turbo charged pickups will continue to use In-cylinder Injection for the upcoming year.

?Types of Diesel Fuel

All diesel fuels are not the same. They are classified into three groups, 1D, 2D and 4D fuels. 1D and 2D fuels are used for highway vehicles or for mobile equipment. 4D fuel is used for units that are either slow or stationary. Diesel engines which are high speed are fuel by either 2D or 1D.
Diesel fuels differ based on their pour point, viscosity and cetane number. What separate 1D fuel from 2D fuel is the viscosity and the pour point. The pour point is defined as the lowest possible temperature that a liquid will still flow. Viscosity is how much a liquid can resist flow. 1D fuel can handle lower temperatures, the fuel will still flow even when the temperature drops. This makes it great for cold temperatures. The pour point is lower and so is the viscosity.
2D fuel has a higher pour point and viscosity. It is best for higher temperatures. Increased viscosity is responsible for improved lubrication in the fuel injection system. The higher BTU’s in 2D fuel allows it to generate more power per gallon of fuel. Higher Btu’s generate increased power. This increases fuel economy. Vehicles with more British thermal units will get more miles per gallon.
The cetane rating is very similar to the octane rating of gasoline. However, there is one significant difference. Cetane measures the ease of fuel ignition. Increased cetane ratings mean the fuel ignites easier. This differs from octane ratings. The higher the octane rating is for gasoline, the resistance is higher for ignition. Manufacturers often have maximum and minimum cetane ratings. Besides meeting 2D or 1D specification, these fuels must also have minimum Btu ratings. If they are not high enough, the miles per gallon will decrease.
Different fuels have different attributes and functions. The same is true for diesel fuel. There are three primary groups. They include 1D, 2D, and 4D fuels. 4D fuel is used for machinery that is either slow moving or that does not move at all. Your 1D and 2D fuels will power your motor vehicles. What sets apart various types of fuels are their cetane number, pour point and viscosity.
2D diesel fuel is best to use in high temperatures. It has a high pour point and high viscosity. 1D diesel fuel on the other hand, is good in lower temperatures. It has a lower pour point and viscosity then 2D fuel.
The Cetane rating is also important when it comes to diesel fuel. It is similar to what the octane rating is to gasoline. It measures fuel ignition and how easy it is to ignite the fuel. ?Diesel or Hybrid – Which Fuel-Efficient Car Solution Is Right for You?

The world is getting greener – or at least that is the impression as the car manufacturers seem to be launching new, more environmentally-friendly models on an almost weekly basis.

But however much you want to save the planet, the main deciding factor when you buy your next new car will usually be financial. The more fuel you save, the more money you keep in your pocket. So how do hybrids and diesels, the great rivals in the race to better fuel consumption, compare? And how do you choose which is right for you?

Let’s take the older of these two technologies first: Diesel gets its name from Rudolf Diesel, who developed the basic processes used in the engines that bear his name way back in 1897.

Although diesel engines have a very long history, it is fair to say that over many decades, they did not really change very much. In fact until the last 15 years or so, diesel engines have been associated with noise and black exhaust smoke, and it was beginning to look like they should be consigned to history.

The black smoke that older diesel engines are responsible for is actually made up of very small particles of soot, called particulate matter (PM), which can cause respiratory illnesses. This resulted in some countries, such as Japan, imposing increasingly strict regulations which all but removed diesel vehicles from the roads.

However, in recent years, diesel has made a comeback. Now championed by such companies as Audi and Mercedes Benz, diesels have become increasingly refined, and the “”common rail”” fuel injection system first commercialized by the Denso corporation in Japan in 1995 has also resulted in lower emissions. It is not just trucks and tractors that use diesel engines now – you can find them in many refined luxury vehicles such as Mercedes, Jaguar and BMW also.

Now, you many be surprised to know that hybrid drivetrains also have a long history. The founder of Porsche, Ferdinand Porsche, built a hybrid called Semper Vivus all the way back in 1900. However, unlike diesel, hybrid powertrains did not take off back then. Perhaps it was the complexity and cost of this solution? Anyway, for years the hybrid looked like an evolutionary dead end – an interesting anomaly in the history of the automobile.

And then came the Prius. First launched in Japan in December 1997, this first full-on commercialization of the hybrid system in a passenger car could also have withered and died on the branch. Back in the late 90s when I had my first ride in this first-generation Prius, it seemed like a technical tour de force, but there was always a question as to who would be buying one?

?Toyota Hiace, a Brief History – Ideal Engines

The Toyota Hiace was first introduced in 1967 and over the years has been available in many different forms. The different configurations available throughout its life include a minivan, a minibus, normal van, pick up truck, taxi and also an ambulance.

The first generation of the Hiace was called the H10 which was available from 1967-1977. In the first generation it was offered as a delivery van and a cab over pick up. This first generation is very rare on the roads today as most of them have been exported to Africa where they see commercial use as public transport vehicles.

The second generation of the Hiace was known as the H20, H30, or H40 and available from 1977-1982. This revised edition had a more streamlined body style and single headlights instead of the previous dual setup. And so this was the first time a 2.2 litre diesel engine was offered in them. Also for this series it was available as a double cap pick up, a high roof commuter vehicle or an extended super long wheelbase van.

The third generation of the Hiace was known as the H50, H60, H70, H80 and H90 and was produced from 1982-1989. The new and improved cab design was similar to that of the larger Toyoace light truck although it had different front styling queues. The model number was in direct relation to the wheelbase dimensions. H50 was the short wheelbase, H60 was long wheelbase and the H70 was considered the super long wheelbase. The pick up versions carried the H80 and H90 series tags.

The fourth generation Hiace was known as the H100 and was available from 1989-2004. These lines of vehicles were available in both short and long wheelbase variants. A range of engines came available in the fourth generation that ranged from 2.0 litre petrol all the way to a 3 litre diesel offering. The fourth generation was predominantly rear wheel drive but there was an option for part time or full time all wheel drive available as well for this run.

The fifth generation of the Hiace is known as the H200 and was produced from 2004-present. All models across Toyota Hiace line use a four cylinder DOHC engine. Although different displacements and fuel types are available the engine overall design is the same throughout the range.

These vehicles have proven to be quite desirable, making it onto Japans list of most commonly stolen vehicles, this is due in part to the fact that they lack a theft immobilizer making it easier to steal than more expensive SUV type vehicles where the immobilizers are standard. They are hard working dependable vehicles with long life spans as long as they are regularly serviced.

?Toyota Tundra Demise? Premature, Indeed!

Speculation is just that…a rumor.

Talk that Toyota is planning to discontinue its big Tundra pickup truck are premature, at least that is the thinking of analysts with Left Lane News, Tundra Headquarters and Auto Trends. All three have reported that Toyota has visited the issue of discontinuing the Tundra, but agree that when 2014 rolls around a new Tundra is likely to surface.

The Toyota Tundra has fallen far short of sales expectations, but there are several good reasons for that including:

No Diesel Option — Unlike Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge Ram, the market leaders, Toyota does not offer a diesel option with its pickup truck. That puts it at a disadvantage especially where fleet operators are concerned. Diesels are more fuel efficient and better at pulling loads than gas engines, something not lost on American truck buyers.

American Dedication — A significant number of Tundra buyers are previous Toyota owners, many of whom have upgraded from the Tacoma. Brand loyalty amongst Ford, GMC, Chevrolet and Dodge truck owners runs deep with very small amounts of people willing to give up their truck brands in favor of something new.

Japanese Competition — Though not much of a competitor, as long as Nissan offers the Titan, don’t look for Toyota to drop the Tundra. Toyota simply does not back out of a segment and certainly won’t cede sales to a Japanese rival. Though Honda’s Ridgeline is built on a car chassis, it too presents competition for Toyota. If the Ridgeline and Titan stay in production, Toyota will keep the Tundra and find a way to put a diesel engine underneath the hood.

Sequoia SUV — If Toyota discontinues its Sequoia SUV, built on the Tundra chassis, then the Tundra’s demise could be around the corner. The Sequoia’s demise seems likely or at least the big SUV could transition to a modified car chassis much in the same way Ford has moved its Explorer to a crossover model. Certainly, Toyota could build the Tundra without the Sequoia, but if Tundra sales continue to fall justifying the big truck would be nearly impossible to do.

Gas prices and tougher fuel economy restrictions can also contribute to any decision Toyota makes about the Tundra. If the 2014 model does arrive, it could be lighter and feature a V-6 engine in addition to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. If not, Toyota could be limited by customer demand as well as by government mandate when it comes to the Tundra, rendering the next model dead on arrival.
