Rubber truck bed mats often show up riding right on expensive permanent bed liners.  Seems odd that a cheap mat would be found over a top-of-the-line bed coating?  Here’s why that’s the case…

? Why Vehicle Donations Are So Popular in The United States

In the 1990s and early ‘aughts, it seemed you couldn’t turn anywhere without seeing an ad or hearing a radio commercial, begging people for vehicle donations. These ads resulted in a massive increase in the number of cars donated per year, but the overall number still wasn’t very high.

According to a General Accounting Office report to the Senate Committee on Finance made in late 2003, the actual number of individuals or small businesses that donated automobiles was less than 800,000. That means that fewer than half a percent of the nearly 200 million Americans who file with the IRS each year had vehicle donations to claim in a given year when the practice was at its height.

This doesn’t count the many who had the right to claim such a deduction for vehicle donations and didn’t bother itemizing their returns. It was estimated that the actual number of donations might be as high as 1 million, or a little over half a percent.

Since 2005, the numbers of vehicle donations have declined with the amount of advertising, but also because the relative benefit to donors has been decreased when the IRS tightened up a loophole that essentially had the federal government subsidizing the used car parts market in the guise of charitable donation.

Today, vehicle donations account for a far lower percentage of tax returns than they did in 2004, though numbers now remain constant, with far fewer discrepancies between the amounts donated to charities thusly and the amount claimed.

That said, there certainly are still opportunities with vehicle donations to claim the full value of your car on the open market – or what the IRS calls the, “fair market value,” of your car. This requires you to find a charitable non-profit organization (NPO) that can use your car directly as part of its charitable mission. This may involve giving it away to a needy family or using it to deliver hot meals.

Of course, given the amount of money spent on advertising, most people don’t realize the donation option that will take their car (often not running) away has become such a difficult prospect. Essentially, most taxpayers who go the option of using a third party agent for their vehicle donations, are limited to a $250 deduction without documentation, and up to $500 without the charitable NPO having to file a Form 8283.

Such a form is sent out after vehicle donations to acknowledge the date, type, actual value to the charity and ultimate use of your gift. This is in addition to the receipt you should get as soon as the title is transferred and the car hauled away.

If you’re able to drive the car or truck to their offices, many charities that have an actual use for your car will accept donations. Otherwise, most third-party agents that facilitate vehicle donations don’t want to assume the liability, preferring instead to tow all vehicles away indiscriminately.

Vehicle donations remain popular in the United States because there is still a potential for a significant tax deduction. However, since 2005 this deduction has been that much more difficult for people making relatively less valuable donations to claim the true “fair market value” for their cars. If one is well-off enough to donate a car that’s worth at least $5,000 in independent appraisal, the way is cleared for this higher rate of deduction.

Choosing a charity that handles vehicle donations independently of for-profit middle-men will allow even smaller donations to retain their full value in deduction form. Were there no tax deductions, it isn’t likely that people would be nearly as interested in charitable donations of cars.

It is uncertain how this is affecting the quality of donated cars, though the quantity certainly has gone down. It is possible that the quality of cars that reach actual poor people who need cars to get to work and day care has actually gone down since there are fewer donated vehicles to choose from, or it may simply be that the quality of donated vehicles has gone up, with those junkers previously sold now going to recycling programs and skirting the donation angle completely.

Pickup truck bed mats work well even if you already have a more expensive liner.  That’s because cheap mats do some things better than any other kind of bed liners.  here’s an example…

Protecting truck beds from damage is one of the main reasons for a truck bed liner.  One way that trucks are damaged often is by cargo hits on the bed.  That makes dents.

Dents, especially big ones, are far harder to deal with than just scratches.  Just a little time and some touch-up paint will make scratches go away.  Not so with big old dents.  They’re there to stay without some serious work.

That’s why dent protection is so important.  It’s usually permanent damage.

Plastic bed liners excel at dent protection as does the rubber mat.  In both cases the liner material absorbs the shock of hits, but there’s more.  The liner spreads the force out over a larger area making it almost impossible to dent the bed except with serious, heavy hits.

Contrast that with a spray on bed liner.  These coatings have some shock-absorbing ability, but not nearly as much as the plastic liner or the mats.  Here’s the other problem…

Spray on bed liners are easily damaged by rough use.  Now, the damage can be repaired.  But, it’s still damage.  Think about the hassle of returning over and over to have a liner repaired, which is really a repaint.  That’s no fun.

Really a plastic liner is almost as good as a rubber mat as absorbing impacts.  The difference is the impacts can readily scratch the plastic material.  The rubber material is much more likely to be completely unmarked.

Add to the toughness of rubber mats the low cost and you see the appeal.

Rubber truck bed mats cost only a fraction of the cost of more expensive liner options like spray on liners and plastic bed liners.  The degree of protection offered by the mats is equal to are greater in several ways to the more pricey options.

You cannot avoid auto repair or truck repair no matter how well you maintain your vehicle. You will still need to bring it to your automotive service center for auto inspection, engine repair or car transmission system repair some time. Perhaps you may need to have some of your car parts replaced with AC Delco car parts, or perhaps you will just need auto oil change. Whatever automotive service you will need, your mechanic will either use hourly billing or flat rate billing. Both are acceptable billing methods in Tampa. But what difference does it make?

Hourly billing is self-explanatory. Your automotive mechanic and automotive service center will bill you for the exact number of hours spent working on your vehicle. Flat rate billing, on the other hand, is based on how much time a flat rate book says a certain type of repair takes when done by the average professional mechanic. The flat rate book is an automotive industry standard that is used everywhere and not just in Tampa.

Flat rate billing becomes a problem when some clients believe that they are being scammed when they are billed for a three-hour repair that the mechanic finishes in just two hours. The clients think they should, therefore, be billed only for those two hours. They should take into consideration, though, that the three hour period specified in the flat rate book is the industry standard in doing such type of repair. This means that the average professional skilled mechanic will take three hours to do the job properly. If the particular mechanic was able to finish it in two hours, and the repair was done well, it just means that this mechanic is exceptionally skilled and perhaps has had long experience in such types of repair. The time and study he has invested in preparing himself professionally up to that point accounts for the speed with which he did the task. It is only fair that he be duly rewarded for it.

If clients fear being scammed, that could be possible with hourly billing, as well. Without the benefit of a flat rate book, clients will not have any idea on how much time it should really take to do a certain type of repair. For all you know, the automotive mechanic could spend four hours on a task that should take only an hour. Even if you do have a flat rate book at hand, the automotive mechanic who is being paid by the hour will not have any incentive to do the job faster even if he has the capability to do so. It will be to his best interest to extend the task to the maximum time possible.

With flat rate billing, therefore, both the client and the automotive mechanic are at an advantage. The mechanic can work at his real pace and if he finishes earlier than expected then the client can drive off much earlier, too. The mechanic can then take on other jobs and the client has lost less downtime.

There are times when the mechanic can even be at a disadvantage with the flat rate billing system. With very new car systems, sometimes the manufacturer’s estimate of how long a certain repair should take is quite tight considering the fact that mechanics have not had enough time yet to master its innovations. It would not be farfetched under such scenarios for mechanics to take even more time than specified in the book. This means they are on the losing end of the deal.

So if your automotive  mechanic in Tampa uses flat rate billing, do not blame him for it. You are not being shortchanged for as long as you are getting the highest quality of auto repair or truck repair.

Truck bed mat protection comes cheap.  Spray on bed liners protect trucks and look good doing it.  That protection comes at a high price though.  Here’s where the lowly bed mat actaully may be better for you…

Nothing beats rubber bed mats for shock absorbing.  That means that you’ll likely get no dents under a mat, even though you’re doing heavy hauling.  Remember though that mats won’t protect fender wells or sides of the bed. 

Preventing dents is so important because dents are tough to fix.  It’s easy enough to repair scratches with a little paint.  Dents are an entirely different matter.  It’s better to prevent dents than fix them.  Here’s another thing…

You can prevent bed scratches under mats.  These things are almost impossible to destroy.  Now spray on liners and plastic liners both excel at preventing scrathes to the bed.  That doesn’t maen though that you can’t scratch the liners.  They both scratch and stay that way, at least until they are repaired.  Think about this too…

Permanent isn’t all good.  More permanent liners are there to stay.  That can really be a problem with drop in liners.  That’s because water may sometimes accumuklat under the liner.  That’s a sure palce for rust to grow…  That’s the beginning of the end. 

An easily removed mat can be cleaned and in and out in just seconds.  It’s easy to check the bed and easy to keep it clean and dry too.

That easy in and out feature doesn something else.

Mats protect more expensive bed liners on many trucks.  Slip it in for rough hauling and then leave it out for normal use.  That way you can protect your liner from damage and keep it looking good and clean.  You use the tough features of a mat, but keep the good looks of the liner.  you get the bed side and fender will protection of the liner too.  It’s the best of all liners.

A truck bed mat protects in some ways better than any other liner material.  It’s so cheap and yet the toughest protection especially protection from dents and grime.
