1986 Ford Ranger 2.3 Turbo Diesel

Just bought a 1986 Ford Ranger with the rare 2.3 Turbo Diesel. Truck has been sitting for 10 years! NO JOKE The tags ran out back in 1998 and it still had a full tank of fuel. (99 cents/gallon) But i pulled it down the road and it fired up! I have the timing belt cover off to make sure the timeing belt wasn’t going to break before i started so its exposed and i have the alternator off. Anyone have parts i would love to buy some. Enjoy!

Yeah, if Dodge was using it in its Ram 50 mini truck already (1983-86).

chevy used the mitsubishi diesels too

Wait a minute … Chevy/GMC had used Isuzu 2.2L diesels in all S-10/15 variants aside from four-wheel-drive (Chevy did offer a diesel version of the previous, Isuzu-built LUV in 4WD, in that truck’s final year of 1982).

i have a wierd taste in vehicles 🙂

not wierd at all I think, they look cool and have character, unlike modern plain rounded cars.
U got rear wheel drive to!
Turn the pump up, fit an exhaust stack using bigger bore pipe from manifold back, replace airfilter with a freeflow one with a cold air feed and u will have a good car.

Any kind of MPG report on this thing? I know the Isuzu 2.2’s in Chevy s10’s are around 35-40 mpg.

@xsonz2 i dont mean to sound rude but what would be desireable about it?

  17. xsonz2 May 13, 2010 at 4:37 am #

@halflife103 the turbo diesel? Its pretty rare, sounds cooler, and good on gas.

  18. micahbean June 14, 2010 at 2:53 pm #

@xsonz2 yeah, it’s great on gas, it DOESN”T USE ANY! :->

@JonathanErber I have an 86 that’s in good shape. Engine needs a little work, valves adjusted and injectors renewed and I am pullign about 22mpg in city driving and abotu 32 on the highway.

FYI, the 1985-1987 Ranger diesel uses a Mitsubishi 4d55T. This engine is still used (in a more modern form) in current overseas Pajeros and others. The current 4d56 has turbo intercooler and produces about 140hp!

i wouldnt trust the belts long and dont use cheap ones cause the pistons will hit valves when they break lol parts are to hard to find for them

  23. Tekkin23 July 17, 2010 at 6:41 am #

    this thing gets 24/28 city/highway

Not bad for its time, then again i think it has like 100 horsepower/80 torque lol

Wait until 2012 I think ford is bringing the turbo diesel back (3.0 TDi, and 2.5 TDi)

Supposubly the 2.5TDi will have a combined MPG of 29 (32highway/27 City)

check out fords new zealand website they are already selling it there.

@Tekkin23 only thing i heard is the f150 is gonna have a small 4.4 V8 diesel. and a V6 twin turbo engine from the new SHO
