    From what I’ve heard, the T in TD means Transport, or Touring. Nice looking car. I’ve always loved Mercedes-Benz of this style. The diesel engine sounds good. How about a drive? I’m glad it has a manual sunroof rather than an automatic sunroof.

    @Seattlecarnut or it means turbo

    I just got an ’84 300DT Sedan, but the previous owner broke off the door trim and hood ornament. Do you know where I could get those replaced?

    I’ve seen 300TDs with and without turbo diesel engines, so the T stands for something other than Turbo. More of them were sold with turbo diesels than in regular diesel form. So naturally, one would believe that the T in TD would mean TurboDiesel. Nice car. I’ve always loved this style for Mercedes-Benz.

    @Seattlecarnut yes i love them too and think i have figured out that they are ALL turbos except for the 1980 models and earlier

    @CerealMarshmallows I’m afraid I’ve never driven a Mercedes-Benz 300TD. It’s too bad you didn’t take the vehicle for a drive, that would’ve been fun.

    @Seattlecarnut MAN I drove this car 300 miles than the nice people who bought it drove the car from san diego to vermont WOW even stayed in it now that would have been a BLAST!!!

    @CerealMarshmallows Awesome!

  9. Onry1 May 27, 2010 at 11:33 am #

    @CerealMarshmallows Actually it was 1981 when Mercedes brought out the Turbo in the states. The T=stands for Transport/Touring D=Diesel and on the Turbo models it’s TDT T=Turbo but Mercees never used the second T.

    @Seattlecarnut The T stands for “Transport and Touring”, a.k.a wagon.

  14. Seattlecarnut July 13, 2010 at 7:21 pm #

    @Iceman2500 Exactly! See? Someone besides myself knows what the T stands for!

    amazing i saw a 1984 300d with 348k miles and it ran like it had just rolled off the line. then again the man who owned it woul have samples of oil tested every change for bad stuff. im sure without the tests it would have been just the same. i love this car wish i could come and get it

    @Seattlecarnut
    The T stands for Turnier. It means “station wagon” in German.

    @Seattlecarnut
    t means it is “wagon” not sedan
    soo a turbodiesel wagon is called 300 T TD

  19. crazywright83 December 12, 2010 at 4:52 am #

    Nice same as my 85 except mines gold but you mite wona check your turbo. I see the turbo but it sounds N/A whene i got mine the turbo was stoped by a pice of dirt and was fixed by a simple spine by my finger. And you are right it dosnt get any better than the 300 TD/

  20. Renntag December 16, 2010 at 6:22 pm #

    T is the designation for “touring” which is the wagon. D is for Diesel fuel.
    A similar gas model would be a 300TE. Note here that the T is not turbo, but again “touring” and “E” is espritzen, for “gas fuel injection”.

    The 300TD with a turbo is referred to on paper as a 300TDT. Touring wagon/Diesel/ Turbo Charged.

    TD does not mean “Turbo Diesel” .

  23. bigbenzdiesel February 22, 2011 at 4:58 am #

    @Seattlecarnut
    Hey Seattlecarnut,
    The T in TD means Touring. All the wagons (and only the wagons) were Touring models. The D does indicate the diesel engine. And of course we all know what turbo means. This ’84 car is the 123 body style. Mercedes also made the Touring wagon in a gasoline engine version post 1984, and it was designated as a TE. These were in the 124 body style. I will tell you friend, many folks think the T meant Turbo, but it is not so.
